When Hong Kong-based bargain label Naxos began, there was much sneering. Many of its recordings were made in Central Europe, and rarely encountered ensembles with names like the Transylvanian Philharmonic conducted by Boris Dracula often had more bite than finesse.

But owner Klaus Heymann persevered and Naxos now sells one in every five classical CDs the world over, wins golden opinions from most critics and can more often be found recording in the UK than in one of Frankenstein's forests.
