FORMER Argentina international midfielder Ariel Ortega was pulled out of training with River Plate this week just two days after telling Argentine newspaper Clarin that he was considering retiring from football for good. Ortega has been one of River's star players this season but has gone public with his battle against alcohol addiction and depression and has struggled to win the support of his coach Leonardo Astrada.
It's a real shame. A nomadic career in Europe ended at Fenerbahce when his own fans unfurled a banner - written by Besiktas fans who tricked their Fener counterparts into displaying it - calling him a 'cowardly hen' in Spanish. Ortega returned home to his first club and 19 years after making his debut, is on the verge of bowing out of football for good.
