not many models can say that their star has risen exponentially with their dress size. At 5ft 9in, 11st 11lb and size 16, American model Crystal Renn is not only Jean Paul Gaultier's catwalk darling, she featured in this summer's Dolce Gabbana swimwear campaign under the lens of Steven Meisel, and in four international editions of Vogue. Ironically, this glossiest of successes eluded her as a 'straight-sized' model when she starved and exercised herself down to seven stone.

As far removed as she is these days from the size 0 (British size 4) debate, 20-year-old Crystal knows firsthand the torments of being unnaturally skinny. At 14, she was scouted by an agent who told her that she had great modelling potential but that she would need to lose ten inches off her hips a colossal 41/2 stone of bodyweight. 'I was young and naive and I really wanted to do the job, so I put myself on a diet that day,' she recalls. 'It started out by just eating healthily to eating fewer than 1,000 calories a day and exercising two to three hours a night, seven days a week. It was very hard on me and my health.' Crystal's hair started to fall out and she needed a nap just to get through the day.
