FOUR YEARS ago, when Ruud Gullit was coach of Feyenoord, there was an advert that aired in Holland in which he left his house in Amsterdam and stepped into a huge dog-turd. It was pouring with rain. Gullit jumped into his 4x4 car and reversed straight into a post. He was then snapped by a speed camera, stuck behind a dustbin van and got a flat tyre. His day got steadily worse, until he approached Rotterdam and Feyenoord's De 0A;Kuip stadium became visible. Then the sun shone, and Gullit finally smiled.

The advert was for Fortis, the insurance company that still sponsors Feyenoord and, if it had been filmed this week, everything but the last scene would have rung true.
