I FIRST went up to Durham 50 years ago when the world was young and sex had not yet been invented. I use the phrase 'went up' but it was more of a sideways move, coming across from Carlisle. But it felt like going up in every other sense ascending, moving on, moving away.

Only four per cent went to university in the Fifties. It will soon be 50 per cent.
