LIKE millions of others, Laura Conway raced into the sitting room at the Saturday-night sound of the X Factor's opening theme at 8pm on a Saturday night. But rather than turn the volume up, an exasperated Laura grabbed the remote control and turned the television off altogether.

'I couldn't even bear to listen to the X Factor music. It brought me out in a sweat,' she said. 'It was like meeting an ex-boyfriend or seeing him with someone new.'
