AUTHOR Salman Rushdie said once that 'free speech is the whole thing, the whole ball game. Free speech is life itself'. He is right. Honest, fearless discussion is the cornerstone of a decent society. When the Wexford goalie Anthony Masterson said after the recent qualifier against Limerick 'it looked like it [the ball] was a yard wide. It's just mind boggling.

We've given up so much of our lives and a decision like that cost us the game', it was hard to disagree.
