While many of his customers are soaking up the sun on holiday, Michael Kain is putting in some hard work as he gets ready for a crucial few months at the company where he is a director, Bramley and Gage, a maker of liqueurs and sloe gin. 'Now is the calm before the storm, since half of our sales are in the three months up to Christmas,' says Michael, 34.

The company, based in South Brent, Devon, was founded by Michael's parents, Edward and Penny, 20 years ago and sells its products through farm shops and delicatessens.
