DAVID MILIBAND has put himself and his colleagues in an awkward position. He volunteered to go on BBC Radio to praise the South African communist militant Joe Slovo, one of the leaders of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress.

So the Foreign Secretary has only himself to blame when others point out that he is ready to excuse terrorism when it suits him, and has no principled objection to it.
