A year after the tsunami brought havoc to lands in and around the Indian Ocean, I visited two resorts in the country that Virginia Woolf's husband, Leonard, described as an 'emerald fringed by gold and set in aquamarine truly a jewelled pendant'.

From Bethnal Green to the Court of the Lion King

Having been MP for Bethnal Green and Bow for eight years, I lost my seat to George Galloway in the General Election last May.

The bitter campaign took its toll, so to recuperate I took off with my whole family for a spot of relaxation in beautiful surroundings.

But as I stepped off the plane in the capital, Colombo, pretty jewels weren't the first thing I saw. Raucous traffic swerved around water buffalo and beneath palm trees before continuing down the coastal road towards Galle, an important trading town and formerly a Dutch fort.
