GARETH EDWARDS has dramatically re-opened the debate on Martin Johnson's future by earmarking England's World Cup-winning captain to coach the Lions on their Pounds 4 million expedition to South Africa in 2009.

At the end of a week in which Johnson distanced himself from an England coaching role, Edwards, a veteran of three Lions tours as arguably rugby's greatest-ever scrum-half, called for Johnson's involvement possibly in partnership with Ian McGeechan.
