NEARLY half of all children from families on benefits or low incomes fail to achieve a single GCSE C grade, the minimum level regarded as a pass by most employers, it was revealed last night.

New official figures show that of the 75,000 GCSE-age pupils who received free school meals last year, a total of 31,647 - just over 42 per cent - did not get a C or above in any subject.
