Long before must-see TV, The Reith Lectures (Radio 4, Wednesday) **** represented must-hear radio. The annual talks will be 60 next year and have continually aspired to debate the key topics of the day. They began with philosopher Bertrand Russell discussing Authority And The Individual, and in the years that followed our leading thinkers have covered nuclear physics, genetics, the value of religion in the digital age and the quest for world peace.

Contributors, who were usually men, were masters of their chosen professions, and the talks have never dumbed down to please those with short attention spans or our modern craving for celebrity. Until last week, when we heard from Geri Halliwell.
