Summary
The Royal Albert Hall was packed for Strictly Gershwin (****), a song-anddance spectacular in which English National Ballet teamed up with stars of stage and television for a sparkling tribute to one of the greatest popular composers of the 20th Century. I suspect, however, that the evening's biggest draw was charming Strictly Come Dancing couple Darren Bennett and Lilia Kopylova, who shimmied their elegant way through It Ain't Necessarily So and Someone To Watch Over Me to sighs of delight from rows of pink-rinsed ladies in the audience.
It was a mixed bag. The overall concept and choreography were in the experienced hands of ENB's former director Derek Deane, but variety was the keynote.
