Weeding can be fun with the right gadget, but avoid anything that is so twee you don't want to get it dirty. For cracks between paving slabs, a proper patio knife is ideal. This has a rugged ice-pick blade to lever out even the toughest weeds.

Or use an old kitchen knife with a short, strong, pointed blade. A dandelion weeder is fun for evicting WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK tap- rooted weeds such as docks and dandelions from borders. Inveigle the business end into the ground near the centre of the rosette of leaves, then use the sharpened inner edges of the 'V' to slice through the root low down. For daisies in lawns, a daisy-grubber is a heftier version of the same thing, with a pair of prongs that you slide down either side of the daisy, then a twist of the wrist simply flicks the offender out. A shorthandled rake is ideal for scuffling up mulch under shrubs or for breaking up cloddy soil in flowerbeds, so disturbing weed seeds.
