WHO would you trust then? A genial-sounding, bespectacled middle- aged man, not without a sense of humour but who somehow has the knack of anticipating what you think every time something goes wrong. Or would you plump for the taciturn, growling old heap of misery in the corner who looks as if he might savage you for voicing an opinion? Or might you prefer that giddy, fresh-faced choirboy, who smiles delightedly at his feeble jokes and always seems to be on a slightly different planet than yours.

Historically it may be a first, having Labour gallop ahead so dramatically, Fianna Fail lose its standing as a national movement, and Fine Gael fail to gain when its traditional rival loses support.
