J. K. writes: I have played a lot of golf and saw the need for a wetweather bag cover that clamps on to a golf trolley. I patented the idea, started manufacturing and marketed it locally.

About four years ago, a customer introduced me to Tim Field, a partner in London law firm Simmons Simmons. The outcome was that I signed a deal with Way Systems Holdings guaranteeing me Pounds 10,000 a quarter, followed by royalties on sales.

But I received only Pounds 5,000 in all.

Since 2003, it has become impossible to contact Field, who has not replied to calls, emails or letters.

I made the mistake of signing over my patent, and though I receive constant inquiries, I cannot make any more covers because the agreement gives those rights to Field's company.
