Watford has long been accommodating population overspill from London, although the drift northwards intensified following the opening of the railway network in 1838.

But whereas in the past people were driven by the desire to escape the disease and overcrowding of the capital, today they are drawn by Watford's combination of convenient transport links, excellent schools and attractive countryside.
