LAST visited Gozo 40 years ago, when we rented a house and lived there for six months - and never intended to return. Scruffy place, so my wife maintained almost from the beginning, what have we done? It was true there seemed to be litter everywhere, walls falling down, houses badly maintained.

The Gozitans kept the insides of their homes immaculate, but didn't seem to care about the outside.

Ramla Bay, the only really good sandy beach, was lovely during the week but after a weekend, when the locals had been joined by visitors from big brother Malta, 30 minutes away on the ferry, it was a dump. You couldn't move for empty sardine tins, rotting tomatoes, Mars bar wrappers.

There was a very small expat community, most of them gay - not that we used the word gay in 1968 - respectable, middle-aged English gents who had decided to flee the subterfuges and laws back home.

They loved Gozo, as it was so remote, so innocent.
