With at least 30 versions of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake available on DVD, it's hard to know which to choose. High up on my list is the reissue of a 1982 Royal Ballet performance (NVC Arts, .Pounds 15.65 inc p&p 01634 832789) ***** featuring the great partnership of Natalia Makarova and Anthony Dowell as Odette-Odile and Siegfried.

Both are caught in their prime, the embodiment of romantic melancholy, and the fine supporting cast includes such fondly remembered talents as Derek Rencher, Michael Coleman and Wayne Sleep. This is a traditional Swan Lake, but also a very beautiful one.
