FOR more than a decade I've visited Greece and stayed near the spot where Saint John exiled by the Roman Empire in 95 AD had revelations in a cave. Not a surprise when you check out his view from Patmos, an island still run by the monastery. John's pad is called the 'Cave of the Apocalypse' not the same as Apocalypse Now; here it's the Greek word meaning the revelation of information withheld from the masses. If you want to avoid mass tourism, take a leaf out of John's book and spend some of your holiday beyond the package-industry scrum.

I'm not saying you should avoid the crowds by avoiding the sights far from it. I strongly encourage you to follow the hordes to the Acropolis. But the trick is to balance inyourface tourism with out- of-the-way tourism, while remaining aware of the pitfalls.

St John ventured off the beaten track and was thrown into a vat of boiling oil. Happily, he emerged unscathed and got cracking on his prophecies, known as the Book Of Revelations.
