The Hampden Roar has Never Sounded so Good, Says Barry

Summary

BARRY FERGUSON last night described Scotlands glorious victory over Ukraine as even bigger than the defeat of France in Paris last month. The Scotland captain based his assessment on the fact that the team had to deal with a level of expectancy which far outweighed the hopes and aspirations of the Tartan Army in the Parc des Princes. As the nation began to celebrate an astonishing victory, Ferguson said: 'This was a massive result for us and I would say it was even more important than the win over France because we knew before the game there was huge pressure on us and we dealt superbly with the level of expectation. We got off to a great start through two set-pieces which we had worked on all week and it was hard to believe that we were two goals in front. Take nothing away from Ukraine, though, they are a quality team. But we showed we are moving in the right direction. Of course, the game was a bit tense and it was only in the last couple of minutes that I was able to enjoy it. But the atmosphere was fantastic because the fans were up for it from the start and that made a huge difference. That was the best atmosphere I've played in at Hampden. It was positively electric.'

'Nowadays, we don't have to impress the supporters like we did a year or so ago when we had to start well to get them behind us. But we are not over-confident. There is room for improvement, but the good thing is the lads are running until the very last second of the game and there is huge commitment.'
