With a mole-prone family and years spent working abroad in sunny countries, I used to have a nice crop of those brown raggedy-edged slightly rough patches on my face and back. I got used to people tapping me on the shoulder and asking in worried tones if I 'knew' I had them. In fact, I had visited the first Mole Clinic in London several years ago to get them checked out and found to my surprise that these frightening-looking moles, medically called seborrheic keratoses, are not dangerous in terms of skin cancer.

Of course, you should beware of all new or growing moles and sunspots, but the most likely problems, I was told, come with small bicoloured moles. I had a couple of 'atypical' moles in two shades of dark brown on my legs not much bigger than freckles.
