WHEN ALL this is over for David Heaney there will be no announcement or goodbye. He'll slip away in the depths of this year's winter, or the next one, and that will be that. All-Ireland medal or not, his relationship with football will come to a grinding halt. And you won't see him for dust.

He's comfortable talking about putting himself out to pasture. He's been looking forward to it for quite some time. Irrespective of what may unfold over the next couple of months, he'll do so peacefully, not at all haunted by the regrets of three All-Ireland final defeats. He doesn't worry enough about them to let them worry him.

Were it not for John O'Mahony's recognition of his 12 seasons of service to Mayo and granting him leave for this year's league, the 32year-old might have departed already.
