So we're having a rubbish summer, but the possibility of serving charred hamburgers to family and friends is still alluring. And for those not lucky enough to have a garden, even the most unpromisingly grim flat roof can be converted into a terrace big enough to wheel out a barbecue.

Before you do anything, check with your council's planning department planners are tightening up on roof terraces. As Ricky Goodwin, project manager for Garden Builders (www.gardenbuilders.co.uk, 020 7381 8002), says: 'You're not going to get permission if you overlook someone's bedroom.' Your choice of materials can also affect your chances. If you need to screen one side of your terrace, a wooden trellis might get the nod where glass or steel wouldn't.
