IT MAY not seem to make much sense to splash out on long-haul travel in the midst of a recession but here's why you might want to consider doing so. The first point to make is that airlines are really suffering from falling demand, so they are desperately trying to fill their empty seats by cutting fares.

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are currently running sales on most of their routes worldwide, for bookings made by the end of Tuesday. Travel dates vary by route but many of the deals apply for flights taken from late summer through the autumn and winter months.
