G. W. writes: I have received a PAYE coding notice from Revenue Customs about how much tax I have to pay on my pension. How can I check whether the amount I'm paying is correct as I find the calculations and written explanation impossible to understand?
J. W. replies: The Revenue's intention is that the amount deducted from your pension covers the tax liability from all your income. The number in the code usually represents the total of your tax allowances, less any untaxed income, divided by ten. For example, if you receive the basic personal allowance, but have income of Pounds 1,000, your code will be 422 (Pounds 5,225 - Pounds 1,000 divided by ten).See the full content of this document
