OVER the summer, I agreed to look after a high-maintenance Hollywood dog while her owners were on holiday in Britain. Each day, I faithfully walked little Lucy morning and evening, carefully chopped up her poached organic chicken at feeding time, and even drove her to the groomer for her weekly wash and manicure.

I was thrilled with my reward: two large bars of Cadbury Dairy Milk, a giant tube of Smarties and a handful of Curly Wurlys.
