DESPITE having no remit in foreign affairs, First Minister Alex Salmond managed to wangle a full 30 minutes with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during his two-day jolly in the States. So what did they find to discuss, in the absence of any separate Scottish foreign policy? Apparently Hillary, left, made a great play of straightening the Saltire on Alex's suit jacket lapel, after deciding it looked a bit too lopsided.
DURING his trip, Mr Salmond seized on the example of Maryland to support his case for more spending powers for Scotland. The state, which has a similar sized population to Scotland's, has received billions in extra funding as part of President Obama's economic stimulus package.
