DESPITE having no remit in foreign affairs, First Minister Alex Salmond managed to wangle a full 30 minutes with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during his two-day jolly in the States. So what did they find to discuss, in the absence of any separate Scottish foreign policy? Apparently Hillary, left, made a great play of straightening the Saltire on Alex's suit jacket lapel, after deciding it looked a bit too lopsided.

DURING his trip, Mr Salmond seized on the example of Maryland to support his case for more spending powers for Scotland. The state, which has a similar sized population to Scotland's, has received billions in extra funding as part of President Obama's economic stimulus package. Had Mr Salmond paid attention to US crime drama The Wire, he would know Maryland is also a hotbed of drugs, sex and violence.
