Liz Jones's recent attack on racing, following her visit to the Grand National, was dreadfully imbalanced and mainly repeated the erroneous message of animal rights activists who want to ban the sport.

The welfare of both horse and jockey is massively important to all racing people, and while the number of runners has risen steadily since 1995, fatalities have been falling since 1997 to - still sadly - about two in every 1,000 runners.
