Q I have felt very tired recently and find it hard to keep awake during the day. I thought it was stress but my GP says it is because my blood count is low, at 9.1. He wants to find out the cause before treating me. I am a 47-year-old Afro-Caribbean woman. I have always taken vitamins regularly.

Could you explain what the figures mean, how this low blood count could have occurred and what I can do to boost it?
