Summary

One of the most important things I think about raising children is bringing them up to be kind and to think for themselves. But it's not how I was raised. I had a happy childhood, but I was more or less taught one thing about religion and one thing about politics. I was told, 'This is what you believe about this part, and that is what you believe about that part.' I wasn't given a choice. It wasn't until I was older that I started to think, 'Well, maybe I don't believe everything I've been told. Maybe I think some parts of it are very interesting, but then there are other parts of it that I reject completely.' I knew from the moment I became a father that my own children were going to be brought up in a different way. I am lucky enough to have a fantastic, beautiful wife, Soon-Yi, and we have two great daughters, Manzie and Bechet, who are either eight and nine or nine and 10 -- I can never figure it out exactly!

We've raised them not in any particular religion but instead as what we call secular humanists - meaning that we've taught them to be honest and kind, and to have respect for human dignity and the rights of other people. And, apart from that, we're trying to keep their minds as open as they can be.
