Summary

Regular readers of this column will be familiar with my hop-on, hop-off, city-tour-by-bus fixation. You can opt for them now in most cities that attract tourists, they tend to cost twentysomething euro and the ticket is usually valid for 24 hours so that you can take in the sights at your leisure. I've done them all over the place - including Dublin - and my most recent topof-the-bus experience was in the baking heat of Naples two weeks ago.

Now, Naples is not as much of a tourist magnet as other nearby towns and people tend to stay in Sorrento or on the Amalfi coast and do the tours there, but, if you ever happen to find yourself in Naples with a few hours to spare then let me tell you that the open- top bus tour is terrific. This is a large, sprawling, slightly edgy but fascinating city and so here there's not just one or even two tour routes on offer but four separate ones. We enjoyed three of them on our recent visit, all in one day, and it gave us a great perspective on this fascinating Neapolitan city. And all for EUR 22 a head which would have allowed us to hop on again the next morning to avail of our full 24 hours' worth had we wanted to.
