In response to the fear that town centres are fast becoming soulless replicas of one another, I passionately believe there is still a market for independent retailers and that it is in a town's interest to support and revitalise its local and privately run businesses.

My father founded Frank Bird and Sons, a high-end designer menswear store in Barnsley, in 1939 at the outbreak of the war, and passed it on to my wife and me in 1974.
