RETURNING to work after a lengthy absence, whether from a career break or maternity leave, can be a daunting prospect at the best of times. But those who left their job before the recession struck may be wondering what they will be going back to.

Women on maternity leave have a legal right to return to the job they left, unless it is no longer reasonably practicable. In a redundancy situation, they also have first refusal on alternative jobs that are available. But employees return-infrom other types of extended leave, such as sabbaticals or career breaks, have less security.
