Summary


I was born in a semidetached three-bedroom house in Sidcup and lived there until I went to study at Cambridge. It was a very typical suburban house of the time, with small bay windows and fake- looking halftimbering on the front.

We had a moderate garden with apple trees in it and a railway embankment at the bottom. I used to watch horsedrawn carts come up to the track and load coal into the trains.
