I have large, open pores, am prone to blackheads and have excessively oily skin, for which I have been prescribed Differin gel. The dermatologist said nothing could be done about the pores. Is that true? And could you explain what makes the skin change like that? I have a good diet, drink lots of water and exercise regularly. I can't wear makeup because my skin greases up quickly. Would I benefit from microdermabrasion?

The skin is our largest organ, covering up to two square metres of the surface of our bodies, but it has a hard time: it's continuously abused, abraded, attacked by micro-organisms such as fungus and bacteria, irradiated by sunlight and exposed to environmental chemicals. Men shave layers off their faces daily and many women do the same to their legs and armpits on a regular basis. No other organ is exposed to so much trouble.
