MAJOR banks insist they are simply trying to be fair in going out of their way to compensate customers they have treated badly in the past. But experts believe they may be conducting reviews under pressure from industry watchdog the Financial Services Authority.

Would they really write to customers out of the blue offering compensation, just because bank bosses thought that was a fair way to behave?
