When a softly-spoken American walked into Battersea Dogs Home, no one could blame the rehoming officer for not knowing who he was. An ordinary-looking man, middle-aged, with receding hair and brown eyes, the only thing that might have given him away was his expensive suit - not that Jade noticed things like that. She'd be more likely to notice, with approval, dog hair on people's clothes.

It's a Celebrity Dog's Life!

Jade began the interview. 'What is your occupation?' she asked. 'Oh, I'm an actor,' he said.

'Are you aware of the financial costs involved in keeping a dog? Feeding, vaccinations, pet insurance, boarding kennels, flea treatment and worming? Do you feel you are able to meet the costs for the duration of the dog's life?' she asked.

He felt he would be able to.

Jade identified him as a genuine dog lover with a good dog- owning history. She went to get the little black mongrel he had chosen.

I walked past the meeting room, glancing through the door. I did a double take.

'Is that your customer in there?' I asked Jade when she returned with a wriggly puppy in her arms.

'Yes. Terribly nice man.'
