AT HALF-TIME yesterday, I was a happy man. Ireland had cleared the cobwebs, dealt with an aggressive Italian side and scored some opportunist tries. Surely, Ireland were going to kick off from there into the second half and I was ruing my 42-10 prediction as being over-conservative. How wrong was I?

Let's concentrate on the first half as the second half turned into a non-event. Never bring a knife to a gun fight was the advice the Irish cop gave to the naive Italian in the movie, The Untouchables. Italy had come with a very blunt knife to attack. It was like stepping back into the dark ages of rugby as they delayed at the base of the ruck, trying to slow down the game. Italy should have looked to slow down the game when not in possession but when in possession?
