MARTIN JOHNSON insisted last night that he must stand by the England players who failed last autumn in a bid to create the kind of winning culture that could produce another World Cup triumph.

Johnson, the triumphant skipper in 2003 who is now England manager, believes dropping the players who suffered three heavy defeats last November against Australia, South Africa and New Zealand will only cause more problems. He is backing his inexperienced team to improve radically during the Six Nations, which starts for England at home to Italy on February 7.
