IF YOU'RE lucky enough not to have been pauperised by the new hike in interest rates, then you don't have to cast around very far to find someone who has been. And unless you have been living under a rock, you can't be unaware of the resulting public narrative of families and householders, already pushed to the brink by a combination of wage cuts and tax increases, and now genuinely despairing of hanging onto their homes.

The country is in a financial panic but in Leinster House, our elected representatives behave as if the news from the European Central Bank is nothing more than a minor and unavoidable irritant.
