ANDREW LANSLEY sat on the metal bench at Westminster Tube station on Thursday night looking exhausted. The Health Secretary, who had just opened a hospice, had spent the past few days trying to rebuff attempts from both No 10 and the Liberal Democrats to slow or water down his plans to reform the National Health Service.

On Friday morning, back in his Cambridgeshire constituency, he was told that his office had the words 'Tory scum' and 'Hands off our NHS' sprayed on it.
