Summary


So, we were in San Francisco, Tony Bennett's city by the bay, and we were just about to go out for a walk. This was at the end of October, a month when the West Coast's weather is notoriously unpredictable, as Indian summer turns into Hong Kong shower and back again at the drop of a San Francisco Giants baseball cap.

And since it had started to rain heavily (Albert Hammond once wrote a song called It Never Rains in Southern California, which is a bit like saying it never rains in Wales), I swapped my thin black loafers for my bulbous once-box-fresh trainers. This was sensible, I thought, because although I almost never wear them outside the gym (why would I?), I didn't have any boots with me, and it didn't make sense to wear leather shoes in the wet.
