BEFORE HIS first game as interim Celtic manager, Neil Lennon gave an interview to BBC Radio which caused my ears to prick up. It was a rarity, a soccer discussion without cliches or waffle. In it, Lennon expressed deep concerns about the lack of real passion among the club's players, young and old. They were spoiled, he said.

'Life as a Celtic footballer is too soft,' he observed. 'The facilities, the ease of it all, everything is laid on for them. There is no striving. We are killing the competitive edge. There are no street footballers any more.' If I were Dermot Desmond, I would have offered him the job there and then. On Thursday night I sat beside Lennon at his old school's reunion. Saint Michael's Lurgan may not be one of the marquee names of colleges football, but it has become a GAA nursery in the care of Derry's Seamus Heffron.
