I'm not really a beach kind of girl. Not in the go-there-and-lie- in-the-sun-and-read-a-book kind of way. Which is probably why I love Irish beaches above all others. After all, if their appeal depended on being bathed in sunshine, we wouldn't visit them too often. So no, I certainly don't associate beaches in this country with sun beds and sun cream, but rather with deserted sands, bracing walks, crashing waves and contemplation. Nor, I'd have to say in response to this week's gongs, do I think of them in terms of their Blue Flag status either, important and all as that is.

I grew up close to one of the most magnificent beaches on this island, walking the two-mile length every weekend of my childhood with my father. It was there that I first galloped on horseback through the sea and first encountered death (a tragic drowning); there that I first drove a car and had my first real kiss.
