Summary
There will come a day when we need not carry newspapers or books with us in their current format - we will be able to get their content on novel-sized sheets of electronic paper, downloaded in seconds to read on or offline. When that happens two media giants, the web and the printed word, will become one. Sadly, that day isn't quite here yet. In America, Amazon's Kindle downloads E-books and news wirelessly via 3G; in Japan, there is a colour E-book (right). The readers here - which can all hold hundreds of books - have flicker-free pages that simulate a printed page, but most are black and white, and none have wireless. Getting E-books can be complicated. Unlike converting CDs into MP3s, your PC doesn't have a slot for paperbacks - so you have to find them online, and they come in a variety of formats (see panel, right).
