BROOKS MILESON has not set a definitive time limit on Gretna ascending to the Scottish Premier League and mixing it with Celtic and Rangers, more a rough guide. He'd like it to happen before he dies. The flamboyant owner, of course, cannot know exactly when either his Third Division club will join Scotland's elite or when he will shuffle off this mortal coil. But he suspects both will happen sooner rather than later.

'We'd better get there quickly because I'm not exactly the fittest bloke in the world,' he says. 'I've only got one kidney, I've got ME and I do everything wrong. I sleep poorly, I'm always flying around like an idiot, I'm hyped up, I put my heart into everything, I don't eat properly and I smoke 100 a day. I'm not expecting a long life, but I expect a good one.' If anyone has the attitude and the awesome amount of adrenalin to laugh in the face of this moribund certainty, then it is the 57-year-old, and somewhat hyperactive, Mileson. Here appears a man who will never tire of kicking the backside out of life.
