When I meet Ben Affleck in a grand suite of Claridge's in Mayfair he's looking a little rough around the edges. He apologises for 'not being even ten per cent fresh', but the jaded look actually serves to reinforce a whole new Affleck. Gone is the pumped, prima-donna action star of Pearl Harbor and Jersey Girl - the more serious, mature actor/producer who first hit Hollywood with Good Will Hunting in 1997 (winning an Academy Award in the process) is back.

After his Oscar triumph Affleck went from serious actor to shameless Hollywood celebrity, garnering a drink problem, a celebrity engagement (to Jennifer Lopez) and a wedding blown apart by pictures of him partying with lap-dancers. 'I think we all make mistakes - it's all about how you deal with them,' he says.
