When Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Simon Hughes appeared on the BBC's Question Time recently, he made a poignant reference to his three brothers and the fact that one of them had died.

He had every reason to look upset. The death of his elder brother, Richard, in July 1992 was especially tragic. At the age of 57, Richard contracted malaria on a two-week honeymoon in Kenya with his bride, Jocelyn Griffith-Jones.

As a result, and despite a phenomenal parliamentary workload, Simon has made it a priority to fight for greater awareness of the dangers this tropical disease presents to travellers.

'Richard was the eldest of the four of us brothers,' says Simon, 59, speaking at his office in his constituency of Bermondsey and Old Southwark. 'He was a modern languages teacher and married Jos, a teacher in adult education.
